There are great promises to be fulfilled. Our world’s nature is changing and will continue to change! What changes prior to Christ’s return will we be able to observe?
The human race is heaping sin in a scale never known before. There has always been sin, there have always been sinful societies – as in Egypt, Babylon or Sodom and Gomorrah. Nonetheless, there has not been a time and won’t be a time where the majority of individuals lead a lifestyle of sin and lawlessness. How do we practice sin and lawlessness? By accepting and incorporating sin in almost every aspect of our lives: Lying and cheating have become a social norm and a “life in sin” – that is an adulterous way of co-habitation – has become the new normal. Homosexuality and other kinds of perversion are politically correct and supported. Every single individual seems to only care for his or her well-being (the never ending search for fun) and ignores the emotions and needs of the others. Worse: Most are not aware of how their actions hurt and influence others. Alcoholism, other substance abuse and a general lack of obedience towards human and godly laws become rampant. Soon we will live in a society of lawlessness where every person follows their own interests and break laws where they see fit.
Christ showed what will happen in the end-times (in which we are living NOW): “And because iniquity [=lawlessness] shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:12).
2. Timothy 3:1-4 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, unforgiving, false accusers, without self-control, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, headstrong, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.”
Now what has that to do with nature?
God created the heavens and the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th day. We are part of that creation and therefore part of nature. God has placed us above the fish in the sea and the birds in the air and every creeping thing (Gen. 1:26).
What is happening to our planet? We are abusing it, literally exploiting it, we are killing it. On a daily basis we produce tons of atomic waste which has no place to go. On a daily basis we pump precious ground water out of the depth of the ground, never to be retrieved. On a daily basis we pump hundreds of tons of toxins of all sorts into the atmosphere, the oceans and the grounds upon which we walk. On a daily basis we burn hectares of forests, obliterate whole species of animals and produce heaps of rubbish which could easily form pillars that reach to the moon.
Why all that? Because of what Christ has predicted: Lawlessness abounds. We do not listen to the laws and needs of nature, we consume as we please and produce without caring for future generations. There might be laws and regulations, but those are a small step towards a life in peace and harmony with nature – as God has created it. Our sins abound so that we do not receive the blessings of nature any more. Sin is nothing but selfishness and the breaking of laws for the satisfaction of our own lusts.
We want to consume, we want to not care, we want a life of fun. This is why Paul explained that in the end-times perilous times will come. Human nature is the same as ever, but now we have the potential to practically do as we please since we have the means: technologically, intellectually, financially. So what do we do? Do we use the advances of modern society for our own good or do we slowly but surely destroy the very ground upon which we rely?
The Bible predicts a multitude of earthquakes in the end-times (Matthew 24:7). The word for earthquakes means “commotion” and can describe tempests, whirlwinds and earthquakes. This is the trend our world’s nature is going. We are going to see many more extreme weather phenomenon: Devastating storms, deadly earth-shaking incidents and on top of it terrible droughts, floods, wild-fires and as a result famines and pestilences.
All these are only the beginning of sorrows (Matthew 24:8).
These days are approaching fast, which is our own fault. We are burdening this planet with so much weight of environmental degradation, that all that is happening even happens without God’s intervention. We are simply unleashing nature’s reactions towards our own selfish and unnatural lifestyles. If we lived according to God’s laws none of that would happen. However, Satan is the god of this world and loves to see it be destroyed (2. Corinthians 4:4 / Revelation 12:12 “Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and in the sea! For the Devil came down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a little time.”)
Nature will continue to change to our own suffering. There will be a shortage of healthy food, clean water and fresh air. Winters will be colder and longer, the sun will shine less, the summers will be hotter, droughts and floods will take turns and us humans will soon have to go without the luxuries of our present days.
Then wars about resources, religions and geo-political dominance will break out everywhere and destroy those who are already downcast.
Only our returning Saviour, Jesus Christ, can fix this. God knew how all this would come. And the sad thing is: We know better, but we don’t act upon it. We simply love our electricity, our daily meat, our fast cars and our full bank-accounts too much to give it up or even to reduce its usage/consumption.
When the world is on its last lap – basically lying in ruins – Christ will return and save us from total devastation (Matthew 24:22).
What will the world be like during the Millennium? Will we continue in our hectic, stressful and self-serving lifestyles?
Micah 4:4 “But they shall sit each one under his vine and under his fig tree…”
Isaiah 11:7-9 “And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”
There will be peace everywhere as a result from obedience to God’s laws. Nature will no longer seem hostile and won’t harm us anymore, but will be a gentle ally that provides for our daily needs.
Right now we can conclude with Jesus Christ’s words who said: “…Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky, but you cannot see the signs of the times!” (Matthew 16:3).
The signs are beginning to be more and more obvious. We are beginning to see Matthew 24 become real. We are doing this to ourselves. When will it end? It will end with Christ’s return.
Romans 8:22 “ And we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.” The pain will intensify and then come to a sudden, but needed end.
My message to our readers now is: Repent, as Christ has commanded us (Mark 1:15). Repent from your sins and hope and pray for a better world. If you follow in the ways the Bible has outlined, God might bestow mercy upon you.
